Home What Happened to Solitude?

Five Million Steps Commentary: Adventure Along the Appalachian Trail

When is the last time you detached yourself from the hum of music and heard the music
of the wind blowing high up in the trees. When have you listened to the many voices of
the wilds and silenced the chatter of a talkative friend? When did you let your soul drink
in the rumble and tumble of the brook as it set your spirit at ease at the end of a long climb
where the body has been taxed and the mind has been emptied out? Has it been a while?
Time for a walk in the wilderness where an old friend called "Solitude" beckons you to
come and walk a few miles. It is not wasted time. It is not idle. It is profitable and right.
For you can be all alone, but in time you will hear God's voice in the wind. If you listen
closely, He will speak peace to your heart.

I'm a good friend of Jeff, here in Little Rock, Arkansas. He recommended your book, "Five Million Steps" and I just wanted to say thanks for writing such a cool book. I've thru-hiked most of the trails in the US and found your perspective to be very refreshing. I found salvation (with Jeff's help) a little over a year ago and love it that someone else can find such closeness with our Father in nature. I've been having a lot of really strong pulls towards mission work... Anyways, thanks again! God bless your determination and willingness to share your experiences! -Patrik
